Fire Prevention

Fire prevention is a function of most fire departments. The goal of fire prevention is to educate the public to take precautions to prevent potentially harmful fires and be educated about surviving them. It is a proactive method of preventing emergencies and reducing the damage caused by them.

Fire Prevention, headed by Fire Marshal Scott Eckstein, is responsible for applying and enforcing the International Fire Code as adopted by the City of Murphy. Duties include the areas of enforcement, engineering, and investigations.

Enforcement Activities

  • Issuing permits
  • Counseling juvenile fire setters
  • Fire investigations
  • Conducting inspections on existing buildings
  • Providing training to Emergency Services personnel on fire inspections, investigations, and fire protection systems

Conducting Investigations

While each fire officer is trained in fire origin and cause investigations, Fire Prevention members are certified to conduct a basic level of investigation, including the filing of arson charges when criminal acts have been committed and providing expert courtroom testimony.

Compliance Items

(1) Received a System Inspection Letter from Fire Prevention?
  • In October 2024, Murphy Fire-Rescue implemented The Compliance Engine (TCE) powered by BRYCER, which is a web-based technology service and analytic suite that assists Fire Prevention to proactively drive fire code compliance and ensure a safer community. Murphy Fire Prevention is utilizing TCE to efficiently manage and maximize the inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire and life safety systems that require annual third-party inspections. If you are receiving a letter from Murphy Fire Prevention stating you are due for an inspection, the system is working. If you have questions or are concerned about the validity of the letter, please contact the Fire Marshal via the phone number or email link to the right.
(2) System Impairment/Annual Inspection Reporting
  • If you are conducting annual fire protection systems tests, a fire inspector does not have to be present. Be sure the system is on “test mode” to avoid false alarm calls to our 911 dispatch.
(3) Fire protection companies are required to submit ALL inspection and service reports to the Compliance Engine.
(4) Murphy Fire-Rescue has adopted and operates under 2021 International Fire Code (IFC)
(5) Please send digital copies of plan reviews/permit submittals to customerservice@murphytx.org
