Moonlight Movies define spring family time in Murphy

MURPHY (March 17, 2023) Family time in Murphy during the spring means gathering together, enjoying an open-air movie specifically produced for family entertainment, and savoring some sweet desserts.

Fortunately, the City of Murphy can satisfy all three of these during the annual Moonlight Movie series, starting Friday, April 14 and continuing on Friday, April 28, (Now May 5), with a finale presentation on Friday, May 12.

The three movies are set for the comfortable amphitheater of Murphy’s Central Park, 550 North Murphy Road, adjacent to Murphy PSA. Each evening’s festivities begin at 7:30 p.m. and the movies start at dusk, usually around 8:30 p.m. There is no charge to attend the movies, and each includes free popcorn, courtesy of Primrose School of Breckinridge Park, drinks, kid’s crafts, and fun inflatables. Free parking is available at the PSA lot.

The season’s debut movie, scheduled for Friday, April 14 is “DC League of Super Pets.” In this action-packed feature, Krypto the Super-Dog and Superman are inseparable best friends, sharing the same superpowers and fighting crime side by side in Metropolis. However, when the Man of Steel and the rest of the Justice League are kidnapped, Krypto must convince a ragtag group of animals to master their own newfound powers for a rescue mission.

On Friday, April 28, (Now May 5) the second movie in the series is “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.” The movie describes how Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for adventure has taken its toll when he learns that he has burnt through eight of his nine lives. Puss sets out on an epic journey to find the mythical Last Wish and restore his nine lives.

The series finale on Friday, May 12 is “Hotel Transylvania 4.” In it, Erika Van Helsing's mysterious new invention transforms Drac and his pals into humans, and Johnny into a monster. With their new mismatched bodies, Drac and the pack must find a way to switch themselves back before their transformations become permanent.

Murphy’s Special Event Specialist Ashley Hudson encourages movie-goers to arrive early, stake out their preferred location and take advantage of the evenings’ usually pleasant temperatures.

“Lawn chairs, blankets, stadium seats, and seating pads are highly encouraged along with bug spray and toys for toddlers and babies,” she said. “Families are also urged to visit one of the many Murphy restaurants, take their food to go, and enjoy a picnic dinner on the amphitheater grounds.” Desserts will be available for purchase from a food truck onsite. The City kindly asks that all trash be placed in the appropriate receptacles.

If inclement weather or the threat of inclement weather should be present, any venue changes, postponements, or cancelations will be announced on the City of Murphy Parks and Recreation event’s web page and Facebook page. Residents are encouraged to become accustomed to checking it regularly.
