Water main replacement to close lane for six months
Caution urged along South Murphy Road construction site
MURPHY (November 3, 2021) Crews working to replace a critically important water main along the northbound side of South Murphy Road will intermittently close the inside lane from Briar Oak St. to FM 544 starting later this month.
Officially called the South Murphy Road Asbestos Cement Waterline Replacement project, the work will start on Nov. 11 and is expected to last some six months, depending on the weather.
While water service is not expected to be interrupted for residents in the area, there will likely be some traffic congestion and delays because of the work.
The project will affect the lane closest to the median along the three-quarter-mile stretch of South Murphy Road from Briar Oak St. to FM 544, among the highest volume streets in Murphy. For this reason, City officials are encouraging commuters to plan their routes with the construction in mind.
Motorists may elect to start their commutes earlier or later, depending on the time of day. Alternatively, taking different routes to avoid the area completely may be preferable for commuters who want to minimize delays. The southbound lanes of South Murphy Road will not be affected.
The project is necessary to replace 3,500 feet of an 8-inch water main, increasing the reliability of water service, improving water flow throughout the system, and addressing the potential of main breaks due to the age of the existing main, the wear due to water pressure, and the life of the existing pipe material.
Construction is under the direction of Murphy Pipeline Contractors, LLC.
