Boards and Commissions set Open House for Oct. 17

Goal is to share information on serving as volunteer

Serving on boards and commissions for the City of Murphy is one of the most effective ways citizens can become involved in municipal government, as these volunteer bodies form an essential advisory role for virtually all decisions that come before the City Council.

“Boards and commissions can play a role in the decision-making process for the Council,” says City Secretary Susie Quinn.  “These volunteers serve to provide advice to Council, and their decisions are respected.”

In an effort to provide as much information as possible to potential volunteers for these important advisory bodies, the City of Murphy is holding the inaugural Boards and Commission Open House on Thursday, Oct. 17 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at City Hall, 206 North Murphy Road.

“The Open House is a way for us to allow residents who may have an interest in placing their names in consideration for an appointment to learn what the various advisory bodies are all about,” she said.  “Staff members who provide support to these boards and commissions will be on hand to answer questions and provide information.”

Attending the Boards and Commissions Open House is not a requirement to apply for a position.  Interested individuals may apply online from now until midnight, Wednesday, Oct. 30 for consideration.  Apply here by pressing the Create button on the following page.

A Council panel will conduct interviews with potential board and commission volunteers in November, and appointments will be made at the Dec. 3 City Council meeting.

The City has eight standing boards and commissions, including the Murphy Community Development Corporation; the Animal Shelter Advisory Committee; the Board of Adjustment; the Building and Fire Code Appeals Board; the Ethics Review Commission; the Municipal Development District Board; the Parks and Recreation Board; and the Planning and Zoning Commission.

When necessary, other boards and commissions may be appointed by Council such as the Charter Review Commission and the Capital Project Advisory Commission, among others.

Light refreshments will be served at the Oct. 17 Open House.
