Spring Clean & Green Event set for new City Hall route
Drive-through, drop-off remains within City Hall driveway
MURPHY (March 22, 2019) The arrival of spring in Murphy is often heralded by the melodic songs of birds, refreshing morning breezes, and the unmistakable sounds of residents cleaning out the garage and attic in preparation of the first Clean & Green event of the year.
The first of the two annual trash and recycling events is set for Saturday, April 13 at City Hall, 206 North Murphy Road, beginning at 9 a.m. and ending promptly at noon. The event will be conducted weather permitting, with updates available on the City of Murphy social media sites.
The event will utilize a different route along the City Hall driveway from previous years. The new configuration will still convert part of the City’s driveway into a drive-through, drop-off route, but with a slightly different entry and exit point. The Clean & Green events are coordinated by Keep Murphy Beautiful and the City’s solid waste contractor Republic Services.
“Residents look forward to both of the year’s Clean & Green events, but the spring version is usually the busiest,” says Bailey Ragsdale, Executive Administrative Assistant for the Community and Economic Development and President of Keep Murphy Beautiful. “Clearing out the accumulated, and often forgotten, knick-knacks, worn-out furniture, clothes that no longer fit, electronics that have outlived their usefulness, and other generally unwanted items is part and parcel of the spring season.”
Among the items accepted are electronics, batteries, household items, pet supplies as well as other items. Document shredding will also be available onsite. Also accepted are items listed as HHW or hazardous household waste. These include wet paint, fertilizers, solvents, chemical agents and other liquids and solids that can cause harm to the environment.
“For many residents getting the attic and the garage cleaned up is a springtime thing, and we’re happy to be part of their annual tradition,” said Ragsdale.
Murphy Police will designate a “last car in line” at noon, referring anyone who arrives after that last vehicle to the fall event in October.
