Deadline for annual recycling poster contest nears


MURPHY (January 6, 2017) The deadline for the fourth annual recycling poster contest is nearing, as entries in all categories are due into the Murphy Customer Service Office at City Hall, 206 North Murphy Road, by 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20.


“The deadline is important because we want to give judges plenty of time to determine the winners,” says Candy McQuiston, chair of the Murphy Green Team and member of Keep Murphy Beautiful.  “The judges already have a hard enough time choosing the winning art projects because of the high quality of entries, and so we want to give them the maximum amount of time to make their decisions.”


The winning entries, as in previous years, will be enlarged and placed on the sides of the recycling collection truck that services Murphy residents.  The three winning works will remain on the truck for a year. 


The contest requires school-aged contestants to create a poster with a mascot depicting “How Can I Make a Difference with Murphy Recycling.”  In addition to meeting the deadline, all entries are required to have an official entry form attached.  Entry forms are available at the Customer Service Office, or via email.  Requests for entry forms and for more information can be sent to McQuiston at cmquiston@murphytx.org

The art and accompanying entry form must be turned in to Customer Service on the first floor of City Hall during regular business hours before the deadline. 


Competition is divided into three grade-level categories:  K-2nd; 3rd to 6th; and 7th through 10th.  Students who reside in Murphy or who attend school in Murphy, including those who are home-schooled, attend private schools or attend alternate educational institutions are eligible.


Posters should be submitted on either standard sized sheet or 11 by 14-inch paper, poster or card stock.  The poster, used in landscape orientation, should include the name of the mascot, and can be created using crayons, markers, water color or acrylic paints, color pencils, ink or other media.  Digitally created posters are also acceptable.


Entries must have the artist’s name, age, grade, address, and phone number clearly printed on the mandatory entry form.  Entries without the form attached to the back of the artwork cannot be accepted.  Each entrant will receive a commemorative T-shirt, and there is a limit of one entry per person. 


The three grand prize winners will be announced at a reception during the City Council meeting of Tuesday, March 21, 2017.  Each of the three winners will choose among a $300 Visa gift card; a Play Station 4; an iPad Mini; a $300 American Girl gift card; or a $300 Best Buy gift card.
