Boards and commissions seeking volunteer members

MURPHY (October 19, 2016) Decision-making on various topics that come before the Murphy City Council are often the result of research, conversations and discussions at the board and commission level, and each year, the City asks citizens to step forward and become part of that process.

"This is traditionally the time of year that we ask citizens to step forward and become part of that process," says Susie Quinn, City Secretary. "Only through an active and involved citizenry can the process work the way it was intended."

There are currently 25 openings in the eight boards or commissions that require people in the community to step forward and become involved.

The six-member Animal Shelter Advisory Committee is seeking three members. It meets a minimum of three times per year.

The Board of Adjustment is made up of 11 members, seven regular members, and
four alternates. Currently, five seats are due for appointment or reappointment which includes three regular members and two alternates. It meets as needed.

Five members make up the Building and Fire Code Appeals Board, which meets as needed. Two of the five positions are up for renewal or appointment.

The Ethics Review Committee has five position, two of which are coming open. It also meets as needed, but at least once a year.

Murphy's Community Development Corporation meets every third Monday, and is composed of seven members, three of which are coming open.

Two of the five members of the Murphy Municipal Development District Board are expiring at the end of the year. This board meets as needed.

Meeting on the second Monday of the month, the Murphy Parks Development Board has seven members. The terms of three of them expire this calendar year.

The Planning and Zoning Commission meets every fourth Monday. Of the seven commissioners, three regular members are facing reappointment or replacement along with one alternate.

Individuals may obtain more information on the role of volunteers, the specific duties of each board, committee or commission and apply for appointment by contacting Quinn at squinn@murphytx.org or 972-468-4011. Applications, will be accepted until 5 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 1. Applicants or returning appointees will undergo an interview with a panel of Council members during November. Appointments and reappointments take effect on Jan. 1, 2017.
