Volunteers sought for annual Arbor Day tree planting

MURPHY (October 14, 2016) Enhancing the overall look of Murphy Central Park is only one reason to volunteer for the annual Arbor Day tree planting event. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 5.

In addition to adding natural beauty, trees serve as filters for urban air pollution and provide a steady supply of life-giving oxygen to the atmosphere, says Candy McQuiston, Customer Service Manager and Keep Murphy Beautiful Director.

“Our Arbor Day program is designed to plant trees where people come together to celebrate events and enjoy the outdoors,” she said. “Trees are nature’s all-purpose workhorses, providing shade, cleaning the air, and providing places for wildlife to flourish.”

The fifth annual Arbor Day tree-planting event runs from 10 a.m. to noon at Murphy Central Park, 550 North Murphy Road.

Volunteers are needed for the annual event, and may register at http://www.murphytx.org/474/Arbor-Day. All ages of volunteers are welcome, though volunteers younger than 16 years of age should be accompanied by an adult.

Volunteers who assist with the two-hour planting will be provided lunch, catered by In-N-Out Burger, at around noon. The first 150 volunteers to register will also receive a commemorative T-shirt, and volunteers will receive bulbs to plant on their own property at no charge.

City staff will be on site to assist with the planting and some tools will be provided. Volunteers should wear closed toe shoes and bring their own work gloves. Shovels brought from home will also be welcome.

Previous tree planting events have added numerous long-lasting trees to the Municipal Complex grounds, and have planted attractive tree-lined borders to adjoining trails.
