Murphy Maize Days races now open for registration

MURPHY (August 29, 2016) For the seventh year in a row, the highly-popular Murphy Maize Days festival will officially begin with a trio of A-Maize-ing Races, all three dedicated to raising funds for worthy causes.

“Participants can choose a race based on their favorite distance, and they’ll know that their participation is helping some very worthy causes,” said Police Lt. Adana Barber, the race coordinator. “We’ll offer a one-mile fun run, a 5K and a 10K. All of the races will pool their proceeds and donate the funds to three causes in equal amounts.”

The races precede the Murphy Maize Days celebration on Saturday, Sept. 24.
All races start and finish inside Tom Kimbrough Stadium, 700 North Murphy Road. The one-mile fun run starts at 7:45 a.m. It is the only one of the three that is run completely inside the stadium. The other two will be run along very scenic routes along some nearby Murphy neighborhoods. An awards ceremony will follow the conclusion of the races at 9:30 a.m.

Funds collected from entries in the three races will benefit the Sgt. Kyle Kucauskas Scholarship Fund, the International Melanoma Foundation, and the Murphy Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund. Sgt. Kucauskas died in early 2013 and the scholarship fund honors his memory. Funds donated to the International Melanoma Foundation are in honor of the late Neal Golden, who succumbed to the disease in 2010. And, the Murphy Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund provides scholarships to worthy Murphy residents who are entering college.

“Registration is now open for the race through the Maize Days website, but only until, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. Then, only onsite registration will be available,” said Barber. Cost of the one-mile fun run is $15, the 5K is $30 and the 10K is $40. There is a $5 increase for all races when registering on race day.

While online registration may be accomplished with a credit card, race day registration can only occur with cash or checks. Run packets can be picked up on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 22 and 23 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the City Hall entryway or at the registration table on race day.

Awards will be presented to the fastest male and female in the 5K and 10K along with the top three finishers in the usual five-year increment age categories. All participants in all three races will receive a commemorative T-shirt while they last.

“We’re going to run the race, rain or shine. We’ll have Murphy Fire Rescue on standby for any emergencies. And, of course, we encourage all of our runners and families to attend the Maize Days festival,” added Barber.
