City Charter Review Commission seeking volunteers

Deadline to apply for membership is March 14

MUPRHY (March 8, 2016) Citizens with an interest in reviewing the Murphy City Charter are being asked to step forward and apply for one of the 11 positions on the Charter Review Commission, says City Secretary Susie Quinn.

"The last time the charter was reviewed was in 2010, and it is now time to look at it once again,” she said. Spots on the Charter Review Commission are open until 5 p.m. on Monday, March 14. The City Council will appoint members from the pool of candidates who express an interest in serving.

The City Charter specifically calls for a citizen review every six years and it further specifies that the document will be scrutinized by a Charter Review Commission made up of 11 Murphy citizens. The Commission is charged with reviewing the charter; inquiring into the operation of the City government; determining whether or not any charter provisions should be revised; proposing those changes; and reporting back to the City Council with recommendations.

“Potential members to the Charter Review Commission should be aware that meetings, work sessions, training, and public Town Hall type meetings will be held, and that they are expected to attend and actively participate,” said Quinn. In addition, candidates for appointment must be registered voters.

The 11 positions on the Charter Review Commission are all voluntary and the commission will disband following the completion of their assigned tasks. The length of service on the Charter Review Commission is for no more than six months from the time of appointment.
