[ARCHIVED] Rainbow Trout Roundup returns on Feb. 20

Trout Roundup

Annual Rainbow Trout Roundup scheduled for Feb. 20

MURPHY (January 19, 2016) Murphy’s highly-popular Rainbow Trout Roundup has become the initial event in the City’s growing list of yearlong family-friendly offerings, says Kayla McFarland, Special Events Coordinator.

“The strong family culture in Murphy makes events like the Rainbow Trout Roundup grow both in popularity and participation,” she said. “It has gotten to where we’ve decided to create a more structured approach to give everyone a fair chance at the prizes.”

The third annual Rainbow Trout Roundup is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 20 starting at 9 a.m. and ending at 11:30 a.m. The pond at the Murphy Municipal Complex, 206 North Murphy Road, is once again the site of the fishing tournament, which will be held rain or shine.

New this year is the breakdown in the schedule for participants by age groupings.

Participants up to 6 years of age are invited to cast from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Then, participants from 7 years of age to 17 years of age may cast their lines starting at 9:45 a.m. until the end of the tournament at 11:30 a.m.

“We’ve separated the youngest contestants so they can enjoy what is likely their first experience with fishing,” she said. “Moms, dads and older siblings can help the little ones with baiting the hooks, tending the line and pulling in their catches. Based on past experience, we know how magical it can be to a youngster to reel in their first catch.”

Anglers 18 years and older can cast their lines after the close of the tournament. As an exception to the licensing requirement, the Texas Parks and Wildlife monitors will suspend the license checks until 4 p.m. That only applies, of course, to the Murphy pond on Feb. 20.

Once the 4 p.m. deadline expires, anyone over 18 who is still fishing must have a valid license and display it when asked. Game wardens plan to be in attendance to ensure compliance. Licenses can be obtained at the local Walmart’s hunting section or at most retailers with an outdoors or hunting department.

To prepare for the tournament, all fishing at the Murphy pond is prohibited from Sunday, Feb. 14 until the start of the Roundup.

Prizes and trophies will be awarded in each age group for the longest Rainbow Trout, the shortest Rainbow Trout and the heaviest stringer of five Rainbow Trout.
