Recycling poster contest shares submission deadline
Third annual competition will crown three winners
MURPHY (October 15, 2015) School-aged kids in Murphy are invited to participate in the third annual recycling poster contest, this year awarding three valuable first prizes as well as reproductions of the winners on collection trucks, says Candy McQuiston, chair of the Murphy Green Team and member of Keep Murphy Beautiful.
“The contest keeps getting bigger every year,” she said. “Also, the rising quality of the entries shows that kids are really understanding and embracing the importance of recycling.”
The contest plays on the current interest in mascots and superheroes by asking school-aged contestants to create a poster with a mascot depicting “How Can I Make a Difference with Murphy Recycling.” The contest has officially started and will conclude with a Monday, Nov. 30 deadline.
Students will compete in three grade-level categories: K-2nd; 3rd to 6th; and 7th through 10th. Students who attend each of the elementary, middle and high schools in Murphy, along with those who are home-schooled, attend private schools or attend alternate educational institutions are eligible, so long as they live in Murphy.
Posters should be submitted on either standard-size or 11 by 14-inch paper, poster or card stock. The poster, used in landscape orientation, should include the name of the mascot, and can be created using crayons, markers, water color or acrylic paints, color pencils, ink or other media. Digitally created posters are also acceptable.
“Entries must have the artist’s name, age, grade, address, and phone number clearly printed on the mandatory entry form,” said McQuiston. “Entries without the form attached to the back of the artwork cannot be accepted.” Each entrant will receive a commemorative T-shirt, and there is a limit of one entry per person.
The art and accompanying form must be turned in to Customer Service on the first floor of City Hall, 206 North Murphy Road, during regular business hours. The deadline to enter is 5 p.m., Monday, Nov. 30.
The three grand prize winners will be announced at a reception during the City Council meeting of Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016. Each of the three winners will choose among a $300 Visa gift card; a Play Station 4; an iPad Mini; a $300 American Girl gift card; or a $300 Best Buy gift card.
