Hazardous waste and electronic recycling set for fall
Residents wishing this complimentary service must call ahead

MURPHY (August 26, 2015) Residents seeking to safely dispose of hazardous household waste or to recycle electronic devices may do so on Saturday, Oct. 10 so long as they call to schedule a pickup, says Customer Service Manager Candy McQuiston.

“Calling ahead and getting on the pickup schedule is something residents must keep in mind,” she said. “Without that call or e-mail message to Progressive, pickup of these items will not occur.”

As part of the contract the City has with Progressive Waste Solutions, the company schedules pickup of hazardous waste and electronic equipment twice a year, usually coinciding with the Clean & Green event. Trucks will only make stops at designated addresses, in keeping with the schedule developed from resident phone calls and e-mails. The phone number is 469-452-8000 and the e-mail address is murphy@progressivewaste.com. Deadline to call and get on the schedule is 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 9.

Among the household hazardous waste collected are ammonia and acid based cleaners; cleaning solvents; drain and oven cleaners; window cleaners; metal polish; fire extinguishers; floor care products; furniture polish and varnish; insect sprays; cooking oil; thermometers; aerosol cans; pet care products; spray, latex and oil based paint; pool shock treatment; pool cleaners and chlorine; power steering fluid; car batteries and battery acid; car wax and cleaners; gasoline and diesel fuel; kerosene and lighter fluid; motor oil and oil filters; paint stripper and thinner; primers; turpentine; transmission and brake fluid; fertilizers; antifreeze; herbicide and fungicide; and tires.

Electronic waste items accepted include answering machines; IPods or other MP3 players; tape players; automotive electronics; keyboards; telephone sets; boom boxes; kitchen appliances (small digital); televisions; cables/wiring; laptops; timers; calculators; lead acid batteries; transformers; cathode ray tube monitors; mainframes; turntables; CD/DVD players; computer mice; video game systems; cell phones; microwaves; walkie-talkies; chargers; pagers; digital cameras; copiers; paper shredders; cordless phones; PCs; printers; electronic typewriters; radios; electronic scrap; receivers; electronic toys; record players; external hard drivers; routers; fax machines; scanners; flat screen/LCD/plasma’ servers; GPS units; speakers; hubs; surge protectors and lights.

“The two annual household hazardous waste and electronic recycling pickup services are done at no charge to residents who call ahead,” she said. “However, any such service scheduled outside of the two permitted ones will be charged to the resident. That fact makes it worthwhile to call Progressive and get on the schedule.”

Material must be curbside by 7 a.m. on the pickup day. More information is available by contracting Progressive at 469-452-8000 or the Murphy Customer Service Center at (972) 468-4100.
