[ARCHIVED] Southbound lanes of North Murphy Road to open on June 12

North Murphy Road to switch traffic on Friday, June 12

MURPHY (June 11, 2015) The long-anticipated opening of the southbound lanes on North Murphy Road is scheduled for Friday, June 12 at 10 a.m., says City Manager James Fisher.

“It’s been a long 24 months, and while the inconveniences have been minor for the most part, we’re glad to see this come to completion,” he said. “Our Activity Center and Community Center have probably suffered the most because of the construction, but as of tomorrow, we can finally put it behind us.”

The switchover, tentatively scheduled for sometime around 10 a.m., will activate the southbound lanes of North Murphy Road from the northern city limits to FM 544. At or around 10 a.m., crews, with the assistance of Murphy Police officers, will open the road to traffic at the northernmost end. Then, they will open the remaining entrances in succession until all of the intersections are open.

After the switchover is complete, work to remove the temporary striping on the northbound lanes and to add the permanent stripes will take place. Motorists are cautioned to drive with care along the northbound side as crews may take several days to complete the restriping task.
“A new traffic light will be activated at Betsy Road,” he added. “That intersection has warranted a traffic light for some time, and so we are glad to see it installed and activated.”

Overhead lights along the median are expected to be operational in the near future. Work on the median beds and major crosswalks will continue for the next several months with crews occasionally closing lanes for safety.

The project has been under construction for two years, converting the two-lane asphalt roadway into the six lane, divided, concrete thoroughfare. Part of the project included a new bridge over Maxwell Creek.
