Murphy Farmers’ Market opens first season on April 18
Opening day coincides with Clean & Green and community clean up
Opening day for the Farmers’ Market in Murphy promises to be eventful and perhaps a bit congested, as the inaugural day of the market which features Texas- or locally-grown products coincides with Murphy Clean & Green and the Great American Clean-up, says James Fisher, City Manager.
“We’ve had numerous occasions when several events overlap, and residents seem to enjoy the variety,” he said. “The City Hall complex belongs to all of our residents, and making use of it as a community gathering spot is very appropriate.”
The Farmers’ Market opens on Saturday, April 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will continue each Saturday until the fall. It will occupy the parking area just south of the entrance to the Community Room.
Kari Gates, president and founder of the Collin County Farmers’ Market, says the added activity will be very welcome. “Sharing the day with people who care enough about the environment to make an effort to recycle and to volunteer to clean up the City makes for perfect harmony with our market,” she said. “After all, we share the same basic ideals for a better planet.”
Collin County Farmers’ Market decided to move from its previous location in Plano to the Murphy City Hall complex for the 2015 season.
Currently, there are some 25 vendors who have expressed an interest in displaying and selling their products. A complete list of these vendors is attached.
The “Rhythm and Beards” band of McKinney will provide entertainment, playing their brand of Texas-based soul and rock. The band is returning for their third season with the market.
“Our first special event will be May 2 for Cinco de Mayo,” added Gates. “Our plan is to create a Mexican-themed lunch plate, utilizing products from the vendors in the market. It will be an opportunity to demonstrate how a consumer can use the produce and merchandise available at the market to create a satisfying and delicious meal.”
