Welcome spring by clearing out the clutter on April 18. Attend the drive-through drop-off or set material curbside.

The annual Clean & Green Trash and Recycling Event, the Great American Clean-up and the curbside pickup of electronic items and household hazardous waste are all set for Saturday, April 18, says Candy McQuiston, Customer Service Manager.

"It seems as though this has been a longer-than-usual winter," she said. "We think a perfect way to welcome spring is to clear all the clutter that has accumulated at home over the long winter. Our springtime Clean & Green event is just the ticket for that. And, the Great American Clean-up helps us spruce up and clean up our City."

The Clean & Green Trash and Recycling Event gets underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 18 at the City of Murphy Municipal Complex, 206 North Murphy Road. The City Hall driveway and a portion of the parking area will be converted into a drive-through recycle event to drop-off electronics, batteries, brush, used building materials as well as other items. Document shredding will also be available onsite. For a full list of collectible items, visit www.murphytx.org.

"We've partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Collin County where they will get any usable lumber or building materials that we get," she said. "Also, clothing or school supplies, backpacks and such will be passed along to the Murphy Middle School Environmental Club for recycling."

The event will occur rain or shine, and will close at noon. Progressive Waste Solutions will be displaying the recycling truck that was recently wrapped with the winning entries in the second annual Keep Murphy Beautiful poster and recycling super hero contest.

Also, the Great American Clean-up is set for that morning with volunteers gathering at Central Park for a 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. litter pick-up campaign. The first 100 volunteers will get a free T-shirt. Lunch will be served to all participants. Volunteers are still needed and can sign up here.

At the same time, Progressive will send out trucks on that Saturday morning to Murphy residences that call ahead and get on the pickup schedule. Electronic waste and household hazardous waste, such as solvents, cleaning agents, wet paint, fertilizers, acids and other items will be picked up at no charge.

Residents with these items must call 469-452-8000 to get on the schedule. Simply placing the items on the curb will not guarantee that they will get collected. A call or email will ensure that trucks arrive. Deadline to get on the schedule is 4 p.m., April 17.

"Spring is a perfect time to get the house and garage cleaned up," said McQuiston. "Whether it's coming to the Clean & Green event or by calling and getting on the pickup schedule, April 18 is the day to get it all done."
