Offices close for New Year’s Day, trash collection shifts
City prohibits use and possession of fireworks
With the arrival of the New Year this week, Murphy residents are reminded of the one-day closure of the City’s administrative offices, and the shift in trash and recycling collection, says Customer Service Manager Candy McQuiston.
“Administrative offices will close for New Year’s Day,” she said. “Even so, residents can feel comforted that all public safety services will be fully available as we welcome in 2015.”
The holiday also means a shift in trash and recycling collection, although only for Thursday and Friday. There will be no collection service on Thursday, Jan. 1. All Thursday routes will be serviced on Friday, Jan. 2. Conversely, Friday’s routes will be serviced on Saturday, Jan. 3.
“This is the standard holiday schedule for trash and recycling,” she added. “Whenever a holiday occurs in the middle of the week, everything shifts forward one day from the day of the holiday.”
Natural Christmas trees may be left curbside as well, as long as they are cleared of lights, ornaments, tinsel, garland or any other material. Flocked trees are not recyclable, so they must be wrapped in plastic before being left on the curb.

Finally, City ordinances prohibit the use or possession of retail fireworks. Their use can cause extremely serious consequences to life and property. Violators are subject to fines and other penalties.
