City seeking volunteers for boards and commissions
Interested individuals must apply by Monday, Nov. 11

MURPHY (November 6, 2014) Over 25 positions for various boards and commissions connected to the City of Murphy are open, and City officials are issuing a call for volunteers to fill these positions, says City Secretary Susie Quinn.

“The importance of citizen involvement in local government is unquestioned,” she said. “Interested citizens who want to make a difference in the life of the community don’t have to run for City Council to be effective. Serving on a board or commission can be just as personally fulfilling and often can have a significant impact on the community.”

Residents interested in the opportunity to get involved have until noon on Monday, Nov. 11 to submit their names for consideration. A panel of Council members will then conduct brief interviews on Nov. 19 and Nov. 20 with candidates to assess their suitability for specific boards or commissions.

Appointments are announced in December and the new board and commission members take office in January. Newly-named Board and Commission members’ terms will expire on Dec. 31, 2016.

Among the boards, commissions and committees seeking members are:

• Animal Shelter Advisory Committee. There are two seats open on this committee. One of the two must be occupied by a representative of an animal welfare organization.
• Board of Adjustment. Four seats on this board are open, three are regular members, and one is an alternate.
• Building and Fire Code Appeal Board. This board seeks two members.
• Ethics Review Commission. The commission has four open seats, two seats whose terms will expire Dec. 31, 2015, the other two seats will expire Dec. 31, 2016.
• Parks and Recreation Board. Four seats on this board are coming vacant.
• Planning and Zoning Commission. The commission is seeking four members. Each of the four must be a registered Murphy property taxpayer.

While the boards, commissions and committees mentioned above have a City of Murphy residency requirement, the following two corporation boards do not.

• Murphy Community Development Corporation (4B). The MCDC is looking for four individuals to sit on the corporation board, each of whom must be residents of Collin County.
• Murphy Municipal Development District Corporation (MDD). This relatively new corporation has two positions open for residents of the City of Murphy or its extraterritorial jurisdiction.

Applications may be acquired from the City Secretary at the Municipal Complex, 206 North Murphy Road, or electronically at www.murphytx.org/473/Online-Application. Applicants who meet the appropriate criteria to apply for an open position will be contacted with further instructions.

“To be considered for an open position on one of these boards, individuals must fill out an application and be willing to attend regularly scheduled meetings during their term,” added Quinn.

More information can be obtained by contacting the City Secretary at (972) 468-4011 or by visiting www.murphytx.org/27/Boards-Commissions.
