MURPHY (April 21, 2021) In response to a request from the Wylie Police Department, the Murphy City Council has voted to eliminate the school zone speed restrictions on McCreary Road adjacent to R. V. Groves Elementary School.
The school, which serves students in Pre-K to fourth grade, is located at 1100 McCreary Road in Wylie, and is a part of the Wylie Independent School District.
The Wylie City Council recently authorized a traffic and pedestrian study by Lee Engineering, LLC, traffic and transportation consultants, and based on the results of the study determined that the school zone speed restrictions on McCreary Road were not essential to the safety of students, parents, school buses or the movement of other school-related traffic.
The Wylie City Council made their determination in February and voted to amend their related City Ordinances to remove the school zone.
The geographic center of McCreary Road is the boundary between the City of Murphy and the City of Wylie, meaning that Wylie rules and regulations apply only to the northbound portion of the road, and Murphy regulations govern the southbound portion of the road.
Changes to the southbound portions can only be made by the Murphy City Council.
Following a presentation by Murphy Police Chief Trey Cotten, the Murphy City Council approved the request and authorized the change in the appropriate Murphy City Ordinances to comply with the speed zone removal.
Signage will be removed and the speed limit throughout McCreary Road will revert to 35 miles per hour.
