Maxwell Creek Road reconstruction to begin

Road Work

Reconstruction of North Maxwell Creek Road to start

Nine-month project to transform historic street

MURPHY (July 17, 2020) Among the more high-profile projects included in the 2017 Capital Improvement Bond program will begin soon, disrupting traffic patterns on North Maxwell Creek Road for the next nine months.

The North Maxwell Creek Road Replacement and Waterline Improvements project, set to transform one of Murphy’s oldest streets, begins next week and will not only enlarge and pave the roadway with reinforced concrete, it will also include the installation of an 8-inch water line, and bring the adjoining ditch swales to grade.

While the water line work will occur between Poindexter Lane and Daniel Drive, the roadway reconstruction will include the stretch from the railroad tracks on the street’s southeast end to the intersection with Tom Clevenger Drive on the northwest end. The work will significantly affect the residents of Willow Wood Ranch Estates as well as commuters who regularly use that thoroughfare. Access to the homes in that stretch will be maintained, but there will be regular requirements for detouring. Visitors to Moulden Cemetery will likewise be affected.

Non-residents who normally use that stretch of North Maxwell Creek Road should plan on finding alternate routes, as heavy machinery, work crews, pipes, sand, gravel, and other materials will be constantly present throughout the fall, winter, and early spring.

Residential access may also be affected from time to time, requiring residents to take alternate routes to and from their homes. During some of the construction schedule, the road will be confined to one lane, necessitating the need to employ flagmen to direct two-way sharing of the lane. Every attempt will be made by the contractor and City personnel to keep residential inconveniences to a minimum.

Plans call for Tom Clevenger Drive to be kept clear as an alternate access point to the area. Expected completion of the road reconstruction and adjacent work is April 2021.
