MURPHY (March 13, 2020) Arising from a cautious level of concern for the health, safety and security of residents and participants, the City of Murphy has announced the cancelation, postponement or schedule changes to several upcoming public events.
The Mother & Son Extravaganza, scheduled for Saturday, March 21 at the Murphy Community Center, has been canceled. However, should conditions change, the event may be rescheduled. Ticket-holders may request either a refund or maintain full credit for either the event, if and when it is rescheduled, or for other selected programs or events offered by the City. The Clean & Green event, set for April 4 in its usual drive-through, drop-off format, will be held as scheduled, but is subject to change. However, the Don’t Mess with Texas trash clean-up component of this event will be rescheduled. The various classes at the Murphy Community Center will continue unchanged, but are also subject to modifications, should conditions warrant. The Murphy Community Center staff will continue to sanitize the facility and will encourage the social distancing guidelines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
The Tunes, Tails and Ales craft beer and music festival, an outdoor event scheduled for May 2, remains at this time unchanged, scheduled to occur as planned. The City will continue to monitor conditions and may announce a change in the near future.
“Our first responsibility is to safeguard the health of our residents,” says City Manager Mike Castro. “Taking a proactive, decisive position on maintaining the safety and security of our citizens is something we take very seriously.”
While there have been no confirmed cases of COVID19 in Murphy, the decision to review events is in line with guidance from the CDC, the Collin County Health and Human Services Department, and other medical experts who agree that limiting social interaction is an effective way to mitigate the spread of the virus.
Active reassessing of events and their disposition will remain in effect for an undetermined period and will apply to gatherings that have the potential of attracting large numbers of the public. As decisions on upcoming events are made, officials will use various means to convey word on their status.
“We are in constant communication with health officials at the local, state and national level, and will continue to make decision in a responsible and conscientious manner,” added Castro.
