[ARCHIVED] YCPA applications accepted until July 12

Applications now being accepted for 2019 YCPA class

Deadline to apply for Youth Citizens Police Academy is July 12

Murphy students entering the sixth through twelfth grades are invited to participate in the annual Youth Citizens Police Academy this summer, says Officer Fred Mancias, the program’s coordinator.

“We are now recruiting young men and women for this year’s one-week academy class,” he said. “The students who participate in the YCPA will experience a week filled with active, hands-on training on a variety of law enforcement topics.”

The 2019 class, set for July 22-26 and will run from Monday through Friday and sessions are held in various Murphy locations, including the Police Department, the Murphy Fire Department and the grounds of the City Hall complex.

“We set up various scenarios around the City Hall campus and run the academy participants through them,” he said. “Our goal is to bring realism and a sense of actual police work to the academy, giving participants a good look at what police officers deal with on a daily basis.”

The academy is free, and lunch is provided on Friday. Water and snacks are provided on the other days. Monday through Thursday classes begin at 8 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. Participants may bring a lunch or have a lunch delivered to the class location during these class days.

On Friday, class is held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and concludes with a graduation ceremony at 5 p.m.

Applicants interested in the YCPA must fill out an application, available under the Community Relations page of the Police Department site at or by visiting the Police Department headquarters at 206 North Murphy Road.

“We have a zero-tolerance policy,” said Mancias. “Any misconduct of any kind is dealt with swiftly and fairly, up to and including removal from the course. We’re looking for motivated kids who want to take this opportunity seriously.”

Application deadline is 5 p.m., Friday, July 12. More information can be obtained by contacting Officer Mancias at (972) 468-4230.
