City wins Governor’s Community Achievement Award

Award from Keep Texas Beautiful comes with big check

MURPHY (March 23, 2017) Long known in the immediate area as a community with an extensive history of strong support for the environment, the City of Murphy has been recognized by the statewide Keep Texas Beautiful organization with a Governor’s Community Achievement Award and a check for $180,000.

The funds are part of $2 million in landscape funding from the Texas Department of Transportation.  Murphy was one of 10 cities in the state to win the recognition, divided by population totals, and will use the money for a landscaping project along a local state right-of-way.

“We are beyond elated,” says Candy McQuiston, Customer Service Manager for Murphy and a Director in the Keep Murphy Beautiful group.  “This award means so much to us because it validates the hard work of our community.  There is never any hesitation on the part of City employees and members of our community when we ask for volunteers for the various clean-up and beautification programs that we sponsor.  This is a community that truly cares for our environment.”

To win the award and the landscaping grant, Murphy submitted materials describing local achievements in seven environmental and community improvement areas, including: community leadership and coordination; education; public awareness; litter prevention and cleanup; litter law and illegal dumping enforcement; beautification and community improvement; and solid waste management.

While the City has been recognized as the winner this year, the Keep Murphy Beautiful program has participated in the program for several years.  This year, the judges deemed the Murphy entry as worthy of recognition as the top application in the 15,000 to 25,000 population category.  Murphy’s population of under 19,000 ranks it among the smaller cities in the category.

“We may be on the smaller side in our category, but the enthusiasm, hard work, and dedication of our staff and volunteers can only be described as limitless,” she said.

Representatives of the City will officially receive the award on June 13 in San Antonio during the 50th Annual Conference of Keep Texas Beautiful.
