Murphy selects veteran urban planner as next director
Mayfield to oversee Community and Economic Development
MURPHY (January 24, 2017) Following an extensive search and interview process, the City of Murphy has selected Jared Mayfield, AICP as the new Director of Community and Economic Development. He starts his new position on Feb. 13.
Mayfield is certified by the American Institute of Planners and is a member of the American Planning Association. He counts on 20 years of experience in a variety of planning and community development positions, most recently as Director of Development Services for the City of Victoria in southeast Texas.
During his nearly five-year tenure as Director, he managed a staff of 25 and was responsible for a budget of over $3 million. He oversaw the GIS aerial mapping section as well as the office overseeing the city’s federal transportation planning, the building inspection section and Code Enforcement among other functions. He also devoted a significant amount of time to economic development as well as to the process of developing the city’s Comprehensive Plan.
His two decades of service to the City of Victoria included assignments as Deputy Director of Development Services for two years, Planning Manager for two years, and Planner and Senior Planner over a 12-year period. Mayfield briefly served as Assistant Director of Planning for the City of Abilene and Urban Planner in the City of Galveston.
He earned a bachelor of Environmental Design in 1994 and a master of Urban Planning in 1996, both from Texas A&M University. He is the past president of the Golden Crescent Habitat for Humanity, and was active in the Keep Victoria Beautiful program, the Victoria Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Victoria, Victoria Main Street Program and Victoria Preservation, Inc.
Kelly Carpenter has served as Interim Director of the department for the last six months. She will remain on staff until Mayfield’s arrival.
